I'm still hoping everything will somehow work out but I've made a dreamwidth account and imported my stuff there just in case. I don't think my own personal privacy is particularly threatened, but the whole thing is bollocks nevertheless, and  if people DO end up leaving LJ in large numbers then no one will comment on my storieeeees  I'll have to go if I'm not to lose touch with people

*sigh*

Oh yes, and please don't repost comments to my LJ to facebook. You needn't worry I will do that to you.

The nice thing about DW is the built-in ease of crossposting. Free accounts can post to one other site, paid ones to three. (I managed, with much blood sweat and tears, to get myself a 'seed' account back when they started up; I could, did I have them, cross-post to five other sites...)

egh yeah

Hello hello. I'm snarryfool over on LJ; friending you over here just in case. The FB/Twitter thing is beyond belief; index entry = "arms, up in."

There are various problems. One, if you turn on Facebook Connect, it posts your real name on your LJ profile without warning. Worse, however, is that it that someone who's got it enabled can then, deliberately or by accident, repost everything they do to Facebook, including comments in other people's posts, including other people's LOCKED posts. So then a link to the locked post, including its title, shows up on Facebook -- now, people not on the user's flist still wouldn't be able to access the post, but they would be alerted to the journal's existence, the subject of the post and, depending on the nature of the comment, maybe a lot more than that.

So, suppose you write a post going, oh "Shitty day: my abusive ex got out of prison. I sure hope he can't track me down. Meanwhile, I've just had an interview at DepressingJobs Ltd, the boss was a creep but I really need the money. And I might have an STD."

Now, someone could reply "Oh, realname, I'll be crossing my fingers for you that the STD tests come back negative, John doesn't harass you any more and I agree, the boss at DepressingJobs is a creep, but good luck anyway." And if they've got Facebook connect enabled, all that would appear on Facebook... and you, the owner of the post, can't stop that happening. There's no "don't let people crosspost to facebook from my journal" setting. And that's an issue even on unlocked entries -- I don't want to lock my fanfiction, for example, but I also don't want "Oh realname, great slash piece!" showing up on Facebook.

I wasn't at all worried about this at first -- I thought LJ would fix the issue promptly. But now it's been well over a week without even any acknowledgement of the concerns -- it's just terrible customer service. And all these other creepy things are coming out -- you can find out more at [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's blog here and on the LJ news page. And people are leaving. It's shitty.
