Help Japan auction thread -- here!

Further cool stuff -- stick around and we'll talk about it!

[...Edit: I really don't understand what is going on with LJ disappearing chunks of my posts lately. I'm rewriting the next paragraph from memory because it has somehow gone and it's the primary point of this entry.]

Edit 2: Okay it's gone again. It really isn't me just carelessly typing over it -- it actually is vanishing. Oh, LJ.

I'm taking the rest of the post down for now -- It's too late to keep fiddling with this. Short version: Lapislazuli67 is translating Winter in London into German! Isn't that bloody amazing?

Okay, let’s try this again. LJ, I’ve got my eye on you and I won’t tolerate any more nonsense.

[livejournal.com profile] lapislazuli67 is translating Winter in London into German. If you’re German or curious, check it out!  I think it’s incredible that she’s doing this at all and, though I don’t speak German, I reckon I can still see something of the rhythm of my sentences in hers, and I get the sense she’s doing a fantastic job. And when I put chunks of her German prose into the notorious Babel Fish, it comes out as remarkably similar to the original, so I think she must be getting it very close. And it’s all so educational for me! Holmes fandom keeps teaching me things, (Social History! Music! Languages!) in the strangest of ways.

Rather amusingly, “Holmes” appears to mean “Cross-beam” in German – or at least, Babel Fish thinks it does. All Watson’s dialogue comes out like “I’m sorry, cross-beam.”

Anyway Lapislazuli  asked me if I had links to the pieces of music Holmes plays  in Winter in London. Which of course I did.  In fact, I'd gone as far as auditioning several candidates before deciding which violin virtuoso my Holmes plays like. (HENRYK SZERYNG.   FOR HE IS THE ANGSTIEST.) But I never posted the links to the chapters at the time. Because, I don't  know, I thought maybe it would be a bit... much? A bit "Bask in the genius of Bach and Szeryng AND MEEEEEE all at the same time!"

But well, so long as you understand that’s not what I’m doing, there's no harm in linking to a
WIL playlist now, is there?

Blathering on about classical music )

Anyway, the reason that youtube channel exists was not because of WIL but because, in my nerdery, I wanted to create a playlist for
[livejournal.com profile] wordstrings ' wonderful  "Paradox" series of stories. (I hope she won't mind my linking to it from here.)  Because these songs fit the characters really well. THEY DO.

BUT IF WAID HERSELF WERE A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, WHAT WOULD HER SONG BE?

Well, recently my muso brother was round,

and apparently... )

Well,  it’s better than sounding like Dido, I guess.
