Dec. 7th, 2010 01:48 pmI don't have all that much on just now, so I thought maybe I'd give the second episode of Sherlock a chance after all.
It's sixteen seconds in ...and I literally screamed "WHAT?!" at the screen.
Really? REALLY? I heard there was going to Orientalism and it would be gross, but ... what the hell is this tea-pouring Confucius-he-say bamboo-flutes fuckery? I count myself well-intentioned but not unusually acute or sensitive; I figured I'd be cringing lightly and missing a lot of what was wrong, I didn't expect to find myself SHRIEKING and whacking pause before anything had even HAPPENED.
Is there actual good stuff in this episode, in any significant quantity? I seem to remember a friend of mine saying on Twitter that John had a completely different and much more annoying personality than his usual/ep 1 self.
Edit: Finished skim-watching. Yuck!
Why did she get to keep the pin?!
ALL the Chinese people are full of mystic, dangerous, Chinese-y LORE?
Is it that hard to a feature a single sympathetic, competent female character who is not in a subordinate position to a man and does not end up humiliated, helpless or dead? God it's bad when being a wailing damsel in distress is actually a step UP. (Edit 2: Naturally it is only the white girl who gets to do this.)
