"I am not...that is not...important."
There's something in particular about your characterisation of Holmes, separate from any other I've read except maybe Katie F's, that I find really satisfying. Prepare for an essay.
CanonHolmes is very egotistical in a strangely autistic way. It's not at all “I am more important than anyone else, their puny minds cannot comprehend my brilliance,” at least as I've always read it. It strikes me as more that he has trouble with the concept that other people are going to be affected by what he does, a classically Aspergery failure to understand that he has an impact on the people around him, that he *matters*. That's always been my interpretation – there's no other way that he could have pulled off such a spectacular piece of emotional fuckery as DYIN, for instance, or indeed Reichenbach, and still expect us to believe that he cares at all about Watson. “I had no idea you would be so affected,” pretty much sums him up. And, my point was, somehow you seem to have captured that Holmes; in an odd sense he's totally selfless.
Also, splendid Mycroft! I adore Mycroft anyway, but you've perfectly captured *my* Mycroft here -and I'm so glad you sent Holmes to him. There's something very comforting and calming about Mycroft and boy, did Holmes need that at this point. As, frankly, did I.
